About the museum
The Muzeum Keltičkova kovárna (Keltička Forge Museum) is a private museum in a house on Keltičkova Street in Slezská Ostrava. It was founded in 2000 on the initiative of its owners, who run it without permanent or paid staff, from their own modest income. The building dates from 1866 and stands on the foundations of an older structure. Due to mining activity, the house and its surroundings are gradually subsiding.
According to local tradition, the blacksmith Keltička discovered black stones in the 18th century that burned better than wood, and knowledge of coal then gradually spread through the Ostrava region. The museum commemorates this event and the beginnings of mining. In front of the building stands a chapel of St Hedwig, patron saint of Silesia, and in the garden there is a monument to the discovery of coal.
The exhibition on the ground floor of the former forge displays coal-bearing fossils, forge equipment, mining tools, period photographs and mining chronicles. The oldest exhibit is a set of stone tools from the early Stone Age. A visit must be arranged in advance with the owners and lasts about an hour and a half.
