About the museum

The idea of setting up a railway museum in Ostrava arose in 2000, when the then railway infrastructure administration was reconstructing the historic 19th-century passenger building of Ostrava střed station and looking for a museum use for its rooms. The aim was to document the history of the railways in the Ostrava region, from the arrival of the first train in Ostrava and Bohumín on 1 May 1847 up to the present day.

The plan took more concrete shape in 2011, when it was discussed with companies in the industry. In spring 2012 the founders decided that the museum would also focus on the operation of sidings serving steelworks and mines, which is typical of the Ostrava area. The public benefit company Železniční muzeum moravskoslezské, o.p.s. was founded on 26 September 2012, with support from the City of Ostrava, the Moravian-Silesian Region, Správa železnic (Railway Infrastructure Administration) and České dráhy (Czech Railways).

Today the museum is located in the station building itself, and since 1 May 2026 it has offered a cross-cutting exhibition on the origin, development and decline of railways in the region. With support from the Moravian-Silesian Region, it is gradually renewing information signs with QR codes, installing interactive digital panels, repairing parts of a steam locomotive, revitalising model railways and modernising eleven exhibition panels.
