About the museum
The foundations of Ostrava's gallery tradition were laid in the 1920s by the collection of builder and collector František Jurečka, which he bequeathed before his death to an association working towards an exhibition building. The association announced an architectural competition, and according to a revised design by the architects František Fiala and Vladimír Wallenfels the Dům umění (House of Art) was built and opened on 13 May 1926. The functionalist brick building, with roof skylights lighting the large halls, is one of the important works of interwar architecture in Ostrava. The first director of Jurečka's gallery was Alois Sprušil, who greatly expanded the collection.
Today's Galerie výtvarného umění v Ostravě is a contributory organization of the Moravian-Silesian Region and the largest collecting gallery in the region. Its collections contain over 25 thousand art objects, from older periods to contemporary art, and the gallery regularly lends them to exhibitions at home and abroad. The administrative and documentation centre has been located in Poděbradova Street since 2008, where there is also a library with a reading room.
Short-term exhibitions alternate in the Dům umění, complemented by guided tours, workshops for children and adults, and programmes for schools. A permanent exhibition is not currently installed there. The building's roof was repaired in 2019, and in 2025 to 2026 the public interiors are being renewed, so that the centenary of the opening is celebrated with a new entrance area, cloakroom and children's zone.
