About the museum
Curia Vitkov is a modern reconstruction of an early medieval noble residence from the 12th and early 13th centuries. The aim of the project is to show an idealized form of a lord's estate, based on archaeology, history and period building techniques. The founder, organizer and site manager is Ladislav Tomič; the site is run by the association Curia Vitkov, z. s.
According to the website, the story of the estate is fictional: shortly before the middle of the 12th century, the knight Vítek was tasked by the castle centre in Mladá Boleslav with setting up watch posts on the northern road to Lusatia, protecting travellers and defending against ambushes. The text of the story was written by historian Dana Dvořáčková-Malá of the Historical Institute of the Academy of Sciences.
The site includes a two-storey wooden palace with a hall and a black kitchen, log houses for the nobility and servants, farm buildings, a textile workshop, a rampart with a ditch and palisade, an entrance tower with a wooden bridge, and below the estate a settlement of three log houses. A stone chapel is planned, modelled on the church of St James in Rovná, and it is to be preceded by a smaller wooden chapel. During the year events take place (for example Gladius, Řemeslnický den, Dobývání), along with volunteer work days and programmes for schools.
