About the museum

The Dům umění began as the Dům umělců (House of Artists), built in 1910 to a design by the Viennese architect Heinrich Carl Ried. The initiative for its construction came from the Moravian Art Society, and the building opened on 25 March 1911 with an exhibition of German-Moravian visual artists. During the Second World War, the conditions of operation changed, and from 1944 exhibitions were banned.

After Brno was liberated in 1945, the city administration took over the building and handed it to artists under the name Dům umění města Brna. In 1946–1947 the building, slightly damaged by bombing, was rebuilt into its present functionalist form. It was then administered by the municipal national committee, and later by the City of Brno.

In 1958 the Dům umění acquired the administration of the Renaissance palace Dům pánů z Kunštátu on Dominikánská Street, where exhibitions began that same year. On the ground floor, a set of exhibition spaces for different disciplines was created, for example the Kabinet grafiky and the Kabinet fotografie.

Throughout its existence, the Dům umění has operated as a kunsthalle without its own collection. Up to 2020 it staged more than two thousand exhibitions, focusing mainly on 20th-century visual art and on current domestic and European art. Today exhibitions and accompanying programmes alternate in both buildings, and the Vašulka Kitchen Brno archive and study room is also open to the public.
