About the museum

The Ossuary at St James (Kostnice u sv. Jakuba) lies beneath the Church of St James on Jakubské náměstí in Brno. A cemetery existed by the church already at the beginning of the 13th century. Because of the lack of space, remains were moved to the ossuary after ten to twelve years. The Josephine reforms of 1784 abolished the cemeteries, and the ossuary fell into oblivion.

It was rediscovered by an archaeological survey in 2001. Based on the number of remains found, it is the second largest ossuary in Europe, after the one in Paris; it is estimated that more than 50,000 people lie here. It has been open to the public since 2012, and the tour is accompanied by original music by Miloš Štědroň.

The ossuary is run by TIC BRNO as part of the Brněnské podzemí (Brno Underground).
