About the museum

The Palác šlechtičen in Brno was built in 1674–1679 by the Brno builder Jan Křtitel Erna as an urban Baroque palace. The house served as a foundation for the education of abandoned noble and middle-class girls. In 1790–1791 it was raised by one storey and connected to the neighbouring Althan Palace; the reconstruction associated with V. J. Eitelberger also belongs to this period. The chapel has late Baroque frescoes.

The Althan Palace was damaged in the war in 1944, and in the 1950s it was saved for cultural use; the reconstruction was led to a design by Bohuslav Fuchs. In 1961 the exhibition “Lid v pěti generacích” (The People in Five Generations) opened here and could be seen until 1999. After reconstruction in 2000–2002, short-term exhibitions have been held in the palace since 2003.

Since April 2022 two permanent exhibitions of the Moravské zemské muzeum (Moravian Museum) have been housed in the palace: “Loutkářské umění” and “Tradiční kultura na Moravě v zrcadle času”. An audio guide exists for both, in the mobile app and via QR codes.
