About the museum
The gallery was founded in 2002 in honour of the Třebíč painter Ladislav Novák and opened in October of that year. It was closed in 2010, and since 2011 it has again served as a space for changing exhibitions. It is in a house in the Jewish quarter near the Zadní synagoga (Back Synagogue) and is run by Městské kulturní středisko Třebíč (Town Cultural Centre). The back room displays objects from Novák's life; the front rooms are used for short-term exhibitions.
Since 17 February 2017 the house has also contained the Memorial Hall of Antonín Kalina, which was opened on the 115th anniversary of his birth. Antonín Kalina, a native of Třebíč, rescued more than nine hundred mostly Jewish boys from the Buchenwald concentration camp during the Second World War, and in 2012 he was awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations.
Two years later the hall was extended with the exhibition The Children of Antonín Kalina. It is devoted to seven boys, from whom significant personalities later grew, and to the doctor Jindřich Flusser, a close collaborator of Kalina. The names of all the rescued boys are borne by a metal Tree of Life, which was made by students of a Třebíč secondary school.
