About the museum
The Geological Pavilion of Prof. František Pošepný is a facility of the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the VSB–Technical University of Ostrava. It opened in September 1989 and is named after Professor František Pošepný, regarded as one of the founders of world ore deposit geology. It is located on the university campus in Ostrava-Poruba and, besides students, is open to schools and the general public.
The history of the collections goes back to 1849, when the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Austria-Hungary bought a mineralogical collection for the newly founded mining school in Příbram and a similar school in Leoben. The collections were further expanded mainly by the school’s teachers. They remained in Příbram until 1945, when the university moved to Ostrava. They were first displayed more comprehensively in 1968 and found a permanent home only after the pavilion was completed in 1989.
Today the pavilion includes mineralogical, petrographic, palaeontological and regional geological collections, as well as collections of mineral deposits, in total over 78 thousand pieces in twenty exhibitions. Valuable are, for example, the samples from the Příbram deposits collected by Professor Pošepný, the ore deposit geology collection, and a model of a tyrannosaurus skeleton on display since 2022. The pavilion offers guided tours, programmes for schools and the game Geohra, in which visitors look for answers directly in the exhibitions.
