About the museum
The Fire Brigade Museum is located in Ostrava-Přívoz in an Art Nouveau building which, from 1905, belonged to the German volunteer fire brigade. From 1919 it was taken over by the Czech volunteer fire brigade, which operated there until 1980. The building was then used by the Municipal Fire Protection Inspectorate, which created the first exhibition there, called the Fire Protection Cabinet.
In 2003 it was decided to convert the building into a full-fledged museum. The reconstruction and extension were completed in 2004, and the museum opened in 2005. The investor was the statutory city of Ostrava, and operations are run by the Fire Rescue Service of the Moravian-Silesian Region, which according to the museum is a unique arrangement in the Czech Republic. A modern extension adjoins the original house and sensitively links the historic building with contemporary architecture.
The exhibition has seven sections and a separate children’s training ground. Visitors trace the development of firefighting from medieval guilds to modern technology, see models of interventions and fire vehicles, historical tools and a garage with equipment. The exhibition also presents the Integrated Security Centre and an exhibition dedicated to the floods of 2024. The museum takes part in the Technotrasa project, which links the technical sites of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
