About the museum
The Mining Museum was set up on the site of Ostrava's oldest shaft, the Anselm mine, later also known as the Urx mine. It opened to the public on 4 December 1993, the feast day of St Barbara, patron saint of miners. It stands at the foot of Landek hill above the confluence of the rivers Oder and Ostravice, which has been a national nature monument since 1992. The site is also known for archaeological finds, above all the Landek (Petřkovice) Venus, a small figurine carved from red ochre from the Stone Age, and evidence that mammoth hunters were the first to use coal.
The tour includes an underground exhibition in the galleries of the upper seams. Visitors change in historic chain-locker changing rooms, descend in the original winding cage and, over about 250 metres of passages, learn about the work of miners and the various mining professions. A separate exhibition presents mine rescue, including the development of breathing apparatus since 1883, and a training ground.
Outdoors there is heavy mining equipment on display, such as roadheaders and longwall shearers, drilling vehicles and locomotives. The site also includes a reconstruction of a prehistoric mammoth hunters' settlement and a mine railway from the 1960s. The museum is part of the larger Landek Park complex, which has restaurants, sports facilities and a campsite. It is run by the association Dolní oblast VÍTKOVICE and is therefore not located on the Dolní Vítkovice site.
