About the museum
The Hlučín Museum is housed in Hlučín Château, a Renaissance building of which only a small part survives, as the owners removed the larger part in the 19th century. Hlučín had a museum from 1948 to 1962, first municipal and then district-level. After the Hlučín district was abolished, it ceased to exist, and its collections passed to the Slezské zemské muzeum in Opava. The new Hlučín Museum was founded in 2005 as a municipal contributory organisation of the town of Hlučín.
The museum is small, with limited collections and exhibition space, so it tries to do things differently from traditional institutions. It focuses on the public, schools and the residents of the region, whose memory it helps to preserve. It holds short-term exhibitions, publishes books and the magazine Hlučínsko, creates educational programmes, and collects the memories of eyewitnesses in cooperation with Paměť národa (Memory of the Nation). It is a member of the Association of Museums and Galleries of the Czech Republic and of the professional network museUM JINAK.
The permanent exhibition Kdo jsou lidé na Hlučínsku? (Who Are the People of the Hlučín Region?), opened in 2014, is modern and interactive, with a virtual reality experience. At its centre stand individuals and their fates, shaped by the historical upheavals of the 20th century and by the search for the identity of the people of Hlučín. Since June 2026 it has been closed for revitalisation; reopening in a new form is planned for December 2026.
The information centre and the municipal library are also part of the museum. The museum also manages the exhibition Cesta k nebesům (Road to Heaven) in the attic of the Church of St John the Baptist, which offers a view over the town.
