About the museum
The Jubilejní kolonie (Jubilee Colony) was built as a company housing estate of the Vítkovice Ironworks for its employees. The first talks on building workers’ houses in Hrabůvka took place in March 1921, and construction proceeded in five stages until 1950. The first houses, designed by Friedrich Kober, were completed in the 1920s; from 1926 the houses of the second phase were designed by the Ostrava architect Arnošt Korner, who drew inspiration from Viennese social housing estates.
The colony received the name Jubilejní in 1928, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the Vítkovice Ironworks. In 1930 several public facilities opened there, such as kindergartens and central baths, and the colony was connected to the tram network.
The Bytové muzeum (Flat Museum) was opened by the Ostrava-Jih city district on 4 February 2024, on the centenary of the founding of Greater Ostrava. The exhibition in the house on Slezská Street presents, in an interactive way, the home of a working-class family of a better-situated employee at the end of the 1930s. All the exhibited objects date from the 1930s, and the museum continues to add to its collection thanks to donations from the public.
