About the museum

The gallery building is the château of Nové Město, which stands on Vratislavovo náměstí. According to tradition, the lords of Lipé had a fortified manor house built here at the end of the 14th century, but no direct written record of it survives. In the 1490s Vilém z Pernštejna added the Nové Město estate to his domain. He did not even have a deputy here, and affairs were handled through an official from Pernštejn Castle.

In 1588 Jan z Pernštejna sold the indebted Nové Město share to Vilém Dubský z Třebomyslic. The purchase contract mentions the castle building, which the Pernštejns had built in the second half of the 16th century as the seat of a newly appointed official and as a temporary treasury for war contributions. Under Dubský, the small Renaissance château was adapted to the form appropriate for a noble residence.

Today the Horácká galerie is housed here and manages collections of sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints, glass, photography, historic furniture and jewellery. The permanent displays present the most important artists associated with the Vysočina region, and the château's cabinet recalls the period when the Nové Město estate belonged for 250 years to the aristocratic foundation Mariánská škola in Brno.
