About the museum
The Regional Museum of the Town of Žďár nad Sázavou has been housed since 1993 in the town Tvrz in the centre of the town, below the church of St Prokop. Its origins go back to 1934, when the preparatory committee of the future museum association met. However, the collections burned in a fire at the Tvrz at the end of the Second World War, and in the following decades the museum was renamed and moved several times, including to the grounds of the Žďár monastery.
After the district museum was abolished at the end of 1992, the institution became the town museum run by the town of Žďár nad Sázavou. In June 1993 it returned to the Tvrz, and from July of that year it has again been open to the public.
In the main building of the Tvrz, short-term and medium-term exhibitions with regional, historical, artistic and natural-science themes alternate during the year. The permanent exhibition on the history of the town is in the nearby Moučkův dům. A guided tour takes visitors from the Middle Ages to the 19th and 20th centuries, shows a First Republic shop and a burgher's salon, and presents the products for which Žďár became known, such as the žďárská síťovka (string bag) or the dýmka žďárka (pipe). The museum also manages a library and an archive for researchers and, in the season, opens the viewing tower of the parish church.
