About the museum
The New Generation Museum was created in the grounds of the château at Žďár nad Sázavou, which stands on the site of a Cistercian monastery founded in the 13th century. In the history of the site, the Cistercian monks were followed by the Baroque architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, author of the pilgrimage church of St John of Nepomuk on Zelená hora (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and later by the Kinský family. After the return of nationalised property in 1992, the Kinskýs have continued restoring the château buildings since 2008, and in 2015 they opened an interactive museum here.
The exhibition tells the story of the place in a modern form. It combines animations, a play of light and shadow and interactive elements, with exhibits on loan from major Czech institutions. Visitors are guided by an audio guide with the voices of a girl from today, a Cistercian monk and other characters. The ground floor is devoted to the Cistercian order and the Middle Ages, and the first floor to the Baroque.
The museum has received, among other awards, the Živa award for the most creative museum in Central Europe and the Stavba Vysočiny award (both in 2016).
