About the museum
František Drdla was born on 28 November 1868 in Žďár nad Sázavou and became a world-renowned violin virtuoso and composer. He studied at the conservatories in Prague and Vienna, worked in Vienna as a violinist and conductor, and performed across Europe and in the United States. He wrote more than six hundred compositions, the best known of which are Vision, Souvenir and Lenore. Although he lived in Vienna, he regularly returned to his hometown.
The memorial room was established in 1988, when the citizens of Žďár named the then people’s art school after Drdla on the 120th anniversary of his birth. The room by the entrance to the school building is maintained by the town of Žďár nad Sázavou. It displays documents and photographs from the musician’s life, examples of his work, concert posters, paintings and personal items from his Vienna apartment, as well as his piano; the composer’s music archive is also kept here. Digitisation of the room’s exhibits has been under way since 2010.
