About the museum
The Železniční depozitář Národního technického muzea in Chomutov is housed in the original locomotive shed of Czech Railways. It holds the most important part of the railway collection of the National Technical Museum (NTM), the largest state collection of historic rail vehicles in the country. The depot has been open to the public since 2013, and the museum opens it every summer season.
Visitors can see almost one hundred vehicles of several track gauges and many different types, from a steam locomotive built in 1870 to vehicles of newer traction types that were only recently retired. The biggest attractions are the steam locomotives, for example the express locomotive Albatros 498.106, which set a record speed of 162 km/h, the first post-war locomotive 534.0301, or the tram steam locomotive Gartenau from 1887. Saloon cars from 1900 and 1906, the prototype of the electric locomotive S699.001 from 1963 and the steam rail rotary snowplough from 1943 also impress visitors.
Between 2021 and 2023, three historically valuable steam locomotives were restored: 411.019 Conrad Vorlauf, 210.001 Serényi and 464.102 Ušatá. The project was supported by the IROP programme, and the locomotives are part of a separate exhibition. On a wall of the depot, visitors will also find a panel exhibition about František Josef Gerstner, a native of Chomutov, prepared by the museum in cooperation with the Regional Museum in Chomutov (Oblastní muzeum v Chomutově).

The surface is asphalt, grass and gravel; at the entrance gate you must cross two tracks, and the wooden planks are bumpy in places.
