About the museum

The Skanzen Stará Ves is run by Zoopark Chomutov and offers a view of the lives of past generations in the Krušnohoří: how people lived, which crafts sustained them and what they grew in their gardens. The creators of the site tried to revive forgotten customs, to build structures that once stood and were later demolished, and to bring back to the landscape plant species that had almost disappeared.

The site is dominated by a replica of a Dutch-type windmill with a small vineyard, whose original stands on the German side of the border in Reichstadt. Also to be seen is a hundred-year-old log building with a thatched roof, moved from Soběnice near Úštěk, a Holy Trinity column, a small chapel and original stone crosses. The chapel with an altar from a demolished church is modelled on the chapel in Krupice near Okounov, which was demolished in the 1960s of the 20th century, and a surviving step from the original chapel serves as its foundation stone.

Life is liveliest on the farmstead, where visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of rural life. The apple orchard was created from grafts of old varieties collected in abandoned villages, and the site is one of the few places where the strictly protected bříza ojcovská (birch) grows.
