About the museum

The first mention of the Chomutov museum dates back to 1851, when the teacher Anton Hübel donated a coin collection to the town. The Municipal Museum and a Museum Society were founded in 1911, and the museum first opened to the public on 8 September 1923 in the premises of the Chomutov town hall. After the Second World War the collections were enlarged with objects from closed museums in neighbouring towns, for example in Jirkov, Kadaň and Přísečnice. From 1960 the museum was a district institution, and since 2003 it has been a contributory organization of the Ústí Region.

The main building on Palacký Street is part of a former Jesuit college from 1591. In the building, which the museum acquired in full after 1990, the director's office, storage depots, the library and exhibition halls with the exhibition Pohledy do pravěku (Views of Prehistory) are located. The complex also includes the Observatory Tower of the seminary, which has been a viewing tower since 2001 and since 2004 has exhibited works by the painter Ilja Sainer.

The museum's second site is the Old Town Hall on 1 May Square (náměstí 1. máje), originally a commandery of the Teutonic Order and later a château. It houses an exhibition of Gothic and early Renaissance sculpture and painting, Všemu světu na útěchu, a lapidarium of stone sculpture, the church of St Catherine and the Monks' Courtyard (Mnišský dvorek). The museum's collections now number more than 638 thousand objects in 29 sub-collections.
