About the museum
The exact date of the founding of Hukvaldy Castle is not known. The first written mention dates from 1285, and from 1359 the castle was permanently owned by the Olomouc bishops, to whom Emperor Charles IV gave it after its redemption. During the Hussite Wars and the Margrave Wars it was besieged and pledged by various owners.
After 1469 Bishop Tas of Boskovice began rebuilding the castle as a new episcopal residence, and his brother Dobeš continued mainly with improving its defences. The castle thus became an extensive fortified residence, whose massive ruin still counts among the largest in the country. In the 19th century the castle was altered, and on 5 October 1762 a fire struck the castle, after which it ceased to be a lived-in residence.
Today the castle belongs to the Beskydy Museum Frýdek-Místek. Visitors can walk around the site at their own pace, visit the restored Renaissance palace with a guided tour, and see a seasonal exhibition. A road about 1.5 km long leads from the village to the castle through the Hukvaldy game preserve (Oboru Hukvaldy).
