About the museum

From the 17th to the mid-20th century Metylovice was closely tied to leather-working. A turning point came in the second half of the 19th century, when the introduction of mass production of high-quality whips made the village famous across Europe. Residents of the surrounding villages mockingly called it “Koňské nebe” (Horse Heaven), but the Metylovice saddlers sought to raise the village's standing and turn it into a respected “Kožane město” (Leather Town).

The municipal museum was officially opened on 7 August 2010 in the premises of a former saddler's workshop. The permanent exhibition was created in expert cooperation with the Novojičín Museum and the Institute of European Ethnology of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. It presents the production methods, the work and the life of the Metylovice saddlers; authentic objects are complemented by period photographs and a short film.

Objects were lent to the museum by local residents, the Beskydy Museum Frýdek-Místek and the Valašské muzeum v přírodě (Wallachian Open-Air Museum) in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. The museum also includes an exhibition hall for displays on the history of the village and the life of its inhabitants. The museum was built from the village's own funds with support from the European Regional Development Fund.
