About the museum
The oldest known record of a cave on Turold Hill dates from 1669. Around 1916, however, limestone quarrying destroyed most of the original cave, and after the quarrying ended in 1934 only remnants were left. Turold Hill was declared a nature reserve in 1946.
Large spaces were discovered in 1951 by amateur cavers from the Speleological Club in Brno. In 1958 the cave was opened to the public for the first time, over a length of 240 metres, but nine years later it was closed again because of the illness of its custodian. After a long period of devastation, cavers reopened it in 2004 with support from sponsors and the town of Mikulov, this time on a route 280 metres long.
Since 2006 the cave has been looked after by the Správa jeskyní České republiky (Administration of Caves of the Czech Republic). Together with Liščí díra (Fox Hole) it forms a labyrinth of passages more than three kilometres long, the largest cave system in Mesozoic limestone in the Czech Republic. The tour passes through the Old Hall, the Boulder Dome, the Treasury with Turold formations, the Bat Dome and the Fairy-tale Hall, and connects with a nature trail with a geopark in the former quarry. In the Hall of the End there is a small exhibition of bones of prehistoric animals and fossils from the Pavlov Hills.
