About the museum

Jurkovič Villa (Jurkovičova vila) in the Žabovřesky district of Brno was built in 1906 to a design by Dušan Jurkovič, who had it built as his own family home on the edge of Wilsonův les (Wilson Forest). It was formally opened on 26 August 1906, and even before the owner moved in an exhibition of architecture and applied art was held in it. The building is in the Secession style and combines elements of Central European folk culture, British modernism and Viennese Secession; its layout centres on the staircase hall.

Jurkovič sold the villa in 1919, and between the wars it changed owners several times. In the 1960s of the 20th century it was declared a cultural monument. The last private owner sold it to the Moravská galerie v Brně (Moravian Gallery in Brno) on 30 June 2006.

Reconstruction took place in 2009–2011 with the aim of restoring the villa to its original form and creating a study centre for modern architecture focused on Jurkovič’s work. The villa opened to the public on 1 April 2011. The garden, with a rose garden, birch trees, pergolas and a gazebo from 1913, was restored according to Jurkovič’s original drawings.

Today the villa is open for guided visits and offers the permanent exhibition Dušan Jurkovič. The Architect and His House, complemented by short-term exhibitions.
