About the museum
The Leoš Janáček Memorial is part of the Moravian Museum and commemorates one of the most important Czech composers. It is located in a garden house next to the former organ school in Brno, where Janáček lived from 1910 to 1928.
When Janáček obtained the building for the organ school in today's Kounicova Street in 1908, he decided to build a house for the school's director in the garden, in place of the unneeded stables. The construction costs were to be repaid from the rent the director would pay. The house, designed by builder Alois Horák, was completed, and the Janáček family moved in on 2 July 1910.
Today the exhibition Život a dílo Leoše Janáčka (Life and Work of Leoš Janáček) includes the composer's original study with a piano. In another part of the house there is a modern exhibition, which presents his life and best-known works in texts and images. Visitors can listen to musical excerpts and watch video documentaries there.
The Moravian Museum also keeps the Leoš Janáček Archive, which is inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register. Its manuscripts are being restored and digitized with the support of the Leoš Janáček Foundation and the City of Brno.
