About the museum

The Mendel Museum of Masaryk University is located in the grounds of the Augustinian abbey on Mendlovo náměstí (Mendel Square) in Old Brno, where Gregor Johann Mendel worked, a member and later abbot of the order and founder of modern genetics. The museum builds on his legacy; it is also a meeting place for experts and a space where the results of science and research are presented to the general public.

The main exhibition, “Gregor Johann Mendel – příběh skromného génia” (“Gregor Johann Mendel – The Story of a Humble Genius”), opened in July 2016 and combines modern technology with historic spaces. It shows Mendel's life, his work on the principles of heredity and his interest in meteorology and beekeeping, among other things by means of audiovisual glass partitions. Visitors can see original objects that belonged to the founder of genetics, his school report, books and teaching aids; the tour culminates in the manuscript of his fundamental work Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden.

The second exhibition, Genetika aneb Podivuhodná cesta do jádra buňky (Genetics, or the Wondrous Journey into the Cell Nucleus), explains Mendel's experiments, the basics of genetics and molecular biology in an interactive way, and was created partly with the support of the Interreg Austria–Czech Republic project. The tour routes also include the monastery garden with an apiary and Mendel's greenhouse, Mendel's room, the Augustinian library and the Gothic basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A new apiary with an exhibition was ceremonially opened on 16 July 2026.

The museum also hosts lectures, for example the internationally recognised Mendel Lectures, at which Nobel Prize winners have also spoken, and the annual autumn festival Mendelovy dny (Mendel Days).
