About the museum
The house in Čejkovice is the last surviving building in which the later first Czechoslovak president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, spent part of his childhood. The family moved to the village in the 1850s because of the father’s transfer at work and stayed until the early 1860s. Young Tomáš received the basics of his schooling there, also studied in the castle library, and in 1864–1865 returned to Čejkovice as an assistant teacher. He later described his years in Čejkovice as some of the most beautiful of his life.
The building was in poor condition in the past; it was saved by local residents, the municipal office and the agricultural cooperative. A memorial plaque on the house was unveiled in 1933. Today it houses a small museum with a permanent exhibition devoted to Masaryk’s life. The house is owned by the local TJ Sokol, and visits are arranged by the municipality of Čejkovice. In May 2018 the roof collapsed and the memorial was closed; after repairs it reopened in October 2018.
