About the museum
The first Svratka museum exhibition was created in 1940 thanks to the Prague publisher Bedřich Tuček, who had settled in Svratka in retirement. He placed the collections, called the Svratecká jizba (Svratka Room), in two rooms of the elementary school. After his death in 1959, however, they were put into storage, and only part of them was gradually preserved. Interest in a new museum was revived by an exhibition for the 650th anniversary of the town's first mention in 2000.
In 2001 local enthusiasts founded the civic association Svratecká jizba, and a year later, in cooperation with the town, a temporary exhibition opened focusing on the crafts of the Svratka region. In 2004 and 2005 the attic spaces of the fire station on U Zbrojnice street were rebuilt into a museum exhibition, to which a grant from the Vysočina Region within the project Klenotnice Vysočiny (Treasury of Vysočina) also contributed. The museum was solemnly opened there on 21 May 2005.
The largest part is the exhibition Městečko v meziválečné době (The Town in the Interwar Period), with furnished houses of craftsmen, a school classroom and a grocery shop. In 2013 a village Jednota shop from the 1970s was added, and since 2006 the museum has also included the Galerie malířů Vysočiny (Gallery of Vysočina Painters). Christmas exhibitions are held here regularly.
