About the museum

The first efforts to found a museum in Skuteč appeared as early as the 1890s and were connected with the young historian B. V. Konečný. The museum was finally founded in 1910 by Václav Jetmar, director of the local burgher school. The collections were first stored and from 1913 partly made accessible in the former school building on the square, later in the house of the Zvěřina brothers.

In 1954 the museum moved to house no. 364 in Rybičková Street, where the composer Vítězslav Novák lived and died; his memory is permanently commemorated by an exhibition on the first floor. In 1956 the museum received the building of the former hospital. The new permanent exhibitions Muzeum obuvi a kamene opened on 3 October 2009; for stonemasonry the cellar spaces and the adjoining garden were reconstructed. Since 1 July 2022 the institution has been called the Regional Museum Skuteč.

The collections include footwear, which is the second largest such collection in the Czech Republic after that of the National Museum, as well as stonemasonry, pipe-making, textiles and white embroidery, weapons, numismatics and natural history objects. The collecting area roughly corresponds to the former Rychmburk estate.
