About the museum
The infantry bunker N-S 71 “V sedle” stands in the forest near Dobrošov, part of Náchod, and belonged to the pre-war Czechoslovak fortifications. It was built by the Bratislava firm of Ing. Rudolf Frič; concreting took place from 4 to 11 April 1938, and its garrison was to consist of 35 soldiers. During the occupation it lost its armoured bells and the embrasures for its main weapons.
In 1986 the federal Ministry of the Interior began rebuilding the bunker in a top-secret operation code-named Kahan III into a fortified reserve communications and transmission centre for the event of war. The project followed on from Kahan I–II in the Hanička fortress. The original form of the bunker changed considerably during the conversion. At the end of 1991 the work was stopped and never finished; until 2003 the building fell into disrepair and was dismantled.
In March 2003 an association of enthusiasts took over the site from the Czech Police for use, and in spring 2004 it opened the Cold War museum Kahan III. Today it is run by the association Kahan III, z. s. (registered association), and the tours are led by its long-standing members.
