About the museum

The idea of founding a museum in Třeboň appeared as early as the end of the 19th century, but it was founded only in 1910. The collections were built from donations by citizens, associations and craftsmen, and the museum moved several times. After the abolition of the Třeboň district in 1960 it ceased to exist and its exhibits went into storage; in 1976 they were transferred to České Budějovice and incorporated into the collections of the South Bohemian Museum.

The revival of the museum was pushed through by the Friends of Třeboň association, founded in 2001. In 2008 the town provided it free of charge with renovated premises on the first floor of the Old Town Hall on the square, where the museum had already operated before the war. The association took over the running of the museum and its collections and gradually created the exhibition The Story of the Town of Třeboň in Eight Centuries. A gallery with paintings by local artists was also established, together with short-term exhibitions and Advent exhibitions of Christmas trees.

In 2023 to 2025 the building underwent extensive reconstruction. The official reopening took place on 14 May 2025, and since then operations have been run by the town's tourist information centre. A new exhibition on the spa history of Třeboň has been added in a room in the tower, and the second floor serves as a gallery for short-term exhibitions.
