About the museum
On the south-western edge of Třeboň's historic centre there first stood a manorial farmstead, later rebuilt into a small stone castle, first mentioned in 1374. The Rožmberk family acquired the town in 1366, founded an Augustinian monastery here, and the settlement developed rapidly. From 1479 Vok of Rožmberk resided in Třeboň and greatly extended the building in the north-western corner.
After a fire in 1562 Vilém of Rožmberk had the castle rebuilt as a Renaissance chateau. The builder Antonín Ericer led the work in 1565–1575 and closed the inner courtyard. The last Rožmberk lord, Petr Vok, moved to Třeboň with his court in 1602 and had the outer courtyard, halls with mirror vaulting and a separate house for the picture gallery and library built. After his death the estate went to the Švamberk family, but the emperor confiscated it in 1621. From 1660 Třeboň belonged to the Schwarzenbergs, who further altered the chateau; in 1859–1860 the so-called Imperial Wing was built.
After the land reform in the 1920s the Schwarzenbergs kept only the chateau building from their whole estate, which in summer served as a hotel. In 1940 the Gestapo seized the chateau, and in 1947 it was nationalised under the Lex Schwarzenberg. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Visitors can see the Rožmberk Renaissance interiors, the private Schwarzenberg suites and the exhibition of historical puppets.
