About the museum

The first mention of the Frýdek castle dates from 1327, when it was built by the Duke of Těšín, Kazimír I. The castle was to guard the border between Moravia and Silesia on the Ostravice river and to protect the newly founded town of Frýdek. The original castle palace was later incorporated into the south wing of the château. The estate was held by the dukes of Těšín, later by a number of pledge holders, and from 1636 by the Counts of Oppersdorf, who built the château chapel of St Barbara and laid out the château park.

After the fire in the town in 1688, the château was fundamentally rebuilt. From 1708 it was held by František Vilém Pražma of Bílkov, who laid the foundations of the collection of coats of arms of Silesian noble families in the Knights' Hall. The pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Frýdek was also built under the Pražma family of Bílkov.

Today the château houses the Muzeum Beskyd Frýdek-Místek, a contributory organisation of the Moravian-Silesian Region. The Château Route opened to the public in May 2002. Visitors can see the representative château interiors, an exhibition on the relationship between nature and people in the Beskydy, the history of the towns of Frýdek and Místek, the Marian pilgrimage site in Frýdek in the sacristy of the St Barbara chapel, and the Memorial to Óndra Łysohorský from 1995.
