About the museum
The Muzeum meteoritů in Místek was founded by its owner Filip, who had moved to the foot of the Beskydy. He became interested in the strewn field of the Morávka meteorite, which fell in the Beskydy in 2000. After searching in vain for stones of his own, he decided to buy a meteorite to learn what one looks like, and began to collect them. From a hobby came an educational website, an online shop and finally the museum.
According to the operator, it is the largest private, publicly accessible collection of meteorites in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The museum reportedly came into being from scratch within eight years, with the help of financial support from partners, and today it is located on Hlavní třída in Místek.
The collection consists of hundreds of exhibits: meteorites, including rare pieces from the Moon and Mars, tektites including Czech vltavíny (moldavites), impact rocks, pseudometeorites, examples of forgeries and replicas of well-known meteorites. The museum also has a shop selling meteorites, tektites and jewellery, a small library with books available to borrow, and lectures about space.
