About the museum

Dřevěný porculán (wooden porcelain), as hand-made wooden tools and vessels were called in Držková, was once the main household income of the village’s inhabitants. The idea of a village museum was discussed in the village already in the 1990s and was carried out by Lubomír Marušák Jr. The aim was to preserve the memory of the former livelihood, namely the household production of wooden objects.

In 2009 a wooden bell tower was built, a copy of the bell tower from Vlčková, and the collecting of exhibits began. In 2010–2011 a mountain herder’s hut made of round logs was added, housing the permanent exhibition. The museum was solemnly opened on 25 June 2011.

The exhibition shows finished wooden products, such as pitchforks, shovels, troughs, bowls and kadluby (tubs) hollowed out of a single trunk, as well as the tools used to make them. The tools are sorted according to the way they are used into percussive, pulling and rotating tools; a wooden stool used to clamp the workpiece is also on display. Among the local monuments are, for example, the horn of the village watchmen from 1885, a village seal from around 1900, and wooden signs from the period of the Second World War. Outside stand a copy of the bell tower from Vlčková, a collection of old beehives (kláty) and a barn.
