About the museum

The museum grew out of the private collection of František Daněk. He began it as a child, when he found his first insulators in a stream. More were added over time: in 1977 the collection held about 400 pieces, and two years later 520 insulators and 120 lightning arresters. After 1989 the collector travelled abroad, visiting manufacturers, users and other collectors, and the collection grew rapidly.

The collection is housed in a mill in Dvořiště, which belonged to the collector’s parents and was confiscated from them during collectivisation. František Daněk bought it back from the agricultural cooperative in 1986 and immediately began converting it into a museum. The museum was officially founded in 2001. The Ministry of Culture protects the collection, and according to available sources it is the largest collection of its kind in Europe.

The exhibition includes insulators made of porcelain, glass, plastics, rubber and wood, historical switchboards by František Křižík, and a collection of lightning rod heads. Some of the exhibits stand outdoors in the garden as the “forest of insulators”.
