About the museum

The museum is set up in a typical farmstead of Central Moravia. The building of unfired (adobe) bricks has a two-sided, hook-shaped layout around the yard and a hipped roof covered with thatch. The traditional arrangement of the house consists of a jizba (main room), a síň (entrance hall) and a komora (storeroom). The house was later extended by a světnice (living room) and another storeroom. The kitchen and the living room served for living and sleeping, and the storerooms for keeping crops and tools.

Farming conditions in the Moravian Karst were not very favourable, so local people already in the 19th century made their living in other ways too. In Senetářov, besides the making of hairpins and net curtains, the working of mother-of-pearl spread. It was brought by the Viennese entrepreneur Alfons Tománek, who founded a factory for mother-of-pearl buttons here in the 1880s. Alongside it a number of small workshops arose, and buttons were also made at home. After the First World War and during the economic crisis, production declined and eventually switched to plastic buttons, which were made here until the early 1980s.

In the museum, the production of mother-of-pearl buttons is shown step by step. There are living rooms with period furnishings, storerooms with agricultural tools and an outdoor exhibition of agricultural machinery. A separate exhibition presents brickmaking with old stamped bricks. In the garden stands a working brick oven, in which cakes, bread or potato pancakes are prepared during the spring festivals.
