About the museum

The Muzeum lidových kapel (Museum of Folk Bands) is housed in the former fire station in the grounds of the château in Lesonice, and its founder is the municipality of Lesonice. It opened on 16 August 2014, on the idea of the association Veselá Nota (Merry Note), which wanted to commemorate the band of Leopold Kosmák.

The Kosmák band was formed in 1931 and originally had eight members. As required, it played as a wind or string orchestra at dances, weddings, funerals and church festivities across the wider area, and was one of the first to use the saxophone. It ceased to exist in 1966.

The collection was built up from musical instruments, scores, photographs and other documents from the descendants of band members. When the museum opened it contained 33 instruments, for example a trumpet from 1936 and scores from 1890. It also includes a replica of the portable stage on which the band performed. Apart from the section on village bands, the museum has a hall of traditions with the history of the village from its first written mention in 1190, and a third section in the style of a historic inn, recalling peasant rebellions that culminated on the Lesonice estate in the summer of 1775.
