About the museum
Vincenc Lesný (1882–1953) was born in Komárovice in the Třebíč area and became the first full professor of Indology at Charles University. He also served as director of the Oriental Institute, was a founding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and dean at the university in Olomouc. As the first European, he translated the poems of Rabindranath Tagore from Bengali into Czech. He was made an honorary citizen by the town of Moravské Budějovice, and UNESCO included the centenary of his birth among the world cultural anniversaries of 1982.
The memorial room was created on the initiative of fellow natives, classmates and the Czechoslovak Indian Society, in his birth house, which now houses the municipal office. The house has a commemorative plaque with Lesný’s portrait. In 2022 busts of Vincenc Lesný and Rabindranath Tagore were unveiled in front of the room.
The exhibition shows some of Lesný’s publications and documents from his travels to India, supplemented by objects connected with India and panels with photographs from his journeys. The room is accessible by arrangement at the municipal office.
