About the museum
The museum's origins go back to 1893, when objects were collected in Moravské Budějovice for the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague. The official Krajinské muzeum (regional museum) was founded in 1922, and the first eight rooms were opened to the public on 5 October 1947 in the town château. In 1965 it was incorporated into the Západomoravské muzeum in Třebíč, and since 2003 it has been a branch of the Muzeum Vysočiny Třebíč, which is run by the Vysočina Region.
The château was built in the 17th century by remodelling several burghers' houses on the square. In 1736 it was bought by the Wallis family, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries it was owned by the Salm family. The nearby Masné krámy (Meat Stalls), dating from 1839, served butchers until the late 1930s, and from 1975 they housed an exhibition on the vanished crafts of south-western Moravia.
The museum was closed for modernisation from September 2018. After more than three years, it reopened in April 2022 with two new permanent exhibitions: Příběh města a zámku (The Story of the Town and the Château) in the château, and Řemesla a živnosti jihozápadní Moravy (Crafts and Trades of South-Western Moravia) in the Masné krámy. The modernisation also created a library, a research room, a visitor centre and a space for educational programmes.
