About the museum
The Muzeum lidových staveb v Kouřimi was founded in 1972 by the Regional Museum in Kolín as a rescue open-air museum, primarily for buildings from the area flooded by the Švihov reservoir on the Želivka. It opened to the public in 1976. Soon afterwards the focus widened to show building techniques of folk architecture from all of Bohemia and Moravia, which proved unrealistic given the limited area of the site and the heterogeneity of the relocated buildings.
After 1990 the collection area was narrowed to Bohemia. Further development, however, was halted for twenty years by a dispute over most of the museum’s land. Ethnographic programmes were therefore developed in the 1990s; they gained popularity but required changes to some of the buildings. The site was declared a cultural monument in 1996.
The dispute ended in 2012 with an agreement between the Central Bohemian Region and the family of the original owners. Since then the existing buildings have been restored, and a large extension has been prepared which is intended to turn the museum into a Muzeum české vesnice (Museum of the Czech Village). Today fourteen larger residential and farm buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries stand here, supplemented by several smaller monuments.
