About the museum

Interest in antiques in Český Brod goes back to 1893, when Jozef Miškovský, an editor and active townsman, acquired several objects, which were kept in the burgher school. In 1894 he proposed founding a museum, and on 12 January 1896 the District Museum Union (Okresní jednota muzejní) was established for this purpose. For more than ten years it struggled with a lack of space; in 1906 it rented two rooms, and in December that year it opened its collections to the public on a permanent basis for the first time.

The Union soon began planning its own building and approached Antonín Balšánek, an architect born in Český Brod. The First World War and Balšánek’s death interrupted the plans. The present museum building was finally constructed in 1927–1928 and opened to the public on 28 October 1931. It also housed the extensive municipal archive, which from 1941 was expertly cared for by Dr Karel Bendařík.

The museum enjoyed its greatest flourishing in the 1950s and 1960s, when exhibitions, lectures and concerts were held here. In 1961 the local national committee took over the museum, and since 1966 it has been a branch of the Regional Museum in Kolín. The permanent exhibition deals with the Battle of Lipany and the Hussite tradition in central Bohemia; the building also houses collections of architectural elements and sculptural monuments from Český Brod and the surrounding area.
