About the museum

The Muzeum městské hromadné dopravy v Praze (Prague Public Transport Museum) is housed in a tram depot in Střešovice, which the Elektrické podniky hlavního města Prahy (Electric Enterprises of the Capital City of Prague) built in 1909. The building is a typical example of purpose-built transport architecture from the early days of Prague’s public transport; it served for storing and maintaining trams until 1992. In 1991 it was declared a technical monument.

After operations ended, the depot was converted for museum purposes, and on 14 May 1993 the museum was officially opened by Prague mayor Jan Koukal. It is operated by the Dopravní podnik hlavního města Prahy (Prague Public Transport Company). The permanent exhibition presents more than four dozen historical vehicles and a range of other exhibits: models, photographs, historical documents, tickets and plans. On 21 July 1998 the Ministry of Culture declared a collection of fifty historical vehicles and thirty-three other collection items a cultural monument.

Part of the exhibition is a permanent display on the history of city transport in Prague, prepared by the Prague Public Transport Company together with several archives and associations. Visitors will see unique photographs, copies of documents and video programmes from film archives. The Muzeum hlavního města Prahy has lent models of extinct vehicles and a ČKD Tatra model of the R 1 high-speed vehicle, which was being prepared for the Prague metro in the early 1970s; long-term loans from the National Technical Museum are also on display.

The depot also remains in operation. Historic trams run from one of the halls on weekends and public holidays, and in the summer season, for example, on circular line No. 41.
