About the museum

The Museum of Art Olomouc was founded in the early 1950s as a regional gallery and regional museum. After several organisational changes it gained legal independence in 1990 and has borne its present name since 1992. Since 2006 its founder has been the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The Museum of Modern Art is housed in the former Hospital of the Holy Spirit on Denisova Street, which was rebuilt in 1915–1918 by architect Jaroslav Kovář the Elder and which the museum acquired in 1989. It serves the permanent exhibition of modern and contemporary art as well as large temporary exhibitions.

The Archdiocesan Museum Olomouc was established in cooperation with the Olomouc Archdiocese in 1998 and opened to the public in 2006. It includes the Chapter Deanery, the chapels of St Barbara and St Anne, and the Romanesque-Gothic Zdík Palace. Its collection of church art is among the most important in the country. The institution also includes the Archdiocesan Museum Kroměříž, opened in 2007.

In the course of its activity, in 2015 the museum became the first in the Czech Republic to receive the European Heritage Label.
