About the museum

The beginnings of museum life in Olomouc go back to the mid-19th century. In 1883 the Musejní spolek olomoucký (Olomouc Museum Society) was founded, from which the first Czech museum in Moravia developed. German and Czech founders built up their collections separately until the German museums were merged in 1924 into the Museum of the Town of Olomouc.

After the Second World War both museums resumed their activities, and in 1951 they were merged into the Krajské muzeum v Olomouci (Regional Museum in Olomouc), based in the former Poor Clares monastery on today’s Republic Square. The museum changed its name several times and has operated under its current name since 1990. Its founder is the Olomouc Region.

The collections number more than one million objects and are among the largest museum collections in the Czech Republic. They consist of natural science, historical and archaeological holdings. The museum also manages the chateau with its park in Čechy pod Kosířem and the Arboretum Bílá Lhota.
