About the museum
The museum in Kořenec was founded in 1985 as a hall of traditions and was first housed in a small chapel that the villagers had built in the 1970s. The basis of the first collections was a photo exhibition about life in the village, together with donations and loans from local residents.
After 1989 the hall of traditions moved to a farmstead, house no. 16. The village bought it thanks to a donation from honorary citizen Jiří Pelikán, and the residents themselves adapted the building with their labour, materials and memories. The museum has operated in its present form since 1992. In 2004 a memorial plaque to Jiří Pelikán was unveiled on the building.
The museum stands in the middle of the village next to the community centre and has a garden. The permanent exhibition shows the life and work of past generations: there is a living room (světnice) and a black kitchen, forgotten crafts, the Kořenec costume including photographs and drawings, and the history of the local folklore groups. In the courtyard are larger agricultural machines and firefighting equipment, for example a hand-operated fire pump from 1895.
