About the museum

The museum in Boskovice traces its origins to a museum society and a municipal museum, founded in 1905 on the initiative of a group of local enthusiasts. The first exhibition room opened in 1906 in the building of the new grammar school. The collections consisted mainly of archaeological finds, ethnographic objects, natural specimens and historical monuments. The museum became renowned for its research into a settlement from the Late Bronze Age and a Celtic hillfort at Staré Hradisko near Protivanov.

After the war the museum moved to the château, and it reopened in 1949. From 1972 to 1992 it belonged to the Okresní muzeum Blansko (Blansko District Museum). After regaining its independence, it moved in 1992 to the so-called residence on Hradní Street, where it is still located. The count's residence dates from the first third of the 18th century; the permanent exhibitions are on the first floor, while short-term exhibitions are held on the ground floor.

The Jewish heritage of Boskovice also belongs to the museum: the Baroque Synagoga maior from 1639 with valuable painted decoration, and the Židovský obecní dům (Jewish Community House) with an exhibition on the Jewish quarters of Bohemia and Moravia. Since autumn 2015 the museum has been a contributory organisation of the South Moravian Region. Its collections have over 63,000 inventory numbers, and archaeological finds predominate.
