About the museum

The museum in Pelhřimov was founded on the basis of a decision by the town council of 11 September 1901, which approved a proposal by Václav Petrů to establish a museum society and a museum. The core of the collections came from an ethnographic exhibition held in 1895 and from antiquities collected by the architect Rožánek. The first permanent exhibition opened in 1908 in three rooms of the former château of the Lords of Říčany on Masaryk Square, which remains the museum's main seat to this day.

After the museum society ceased to exist in 1951, the state took over the museum, and from 1954 it operated as a district local history museum. In 1991 a new permanent exhibition opened in the château, and from 1985 to 2004 the museum also used exhibition space in the so-called Šrejnar House. Since 2003 the museum has been a contributory organization of the Vysočina Region and bears its current name, Muzeum Vysočiny Pelhřimov.

In 2004 the historic town dungeon with its torture chamber, cell and the Chapel of the Holy Cross opened to the public, and in 2005 an exhibition on the sculptor and medallist Josef Šejnost and his son Zdeněk. The museum also includes a branch at Kámen Castle, which was added in 2011, and since 2017 the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kámen.
