About the museum
The Ostrava branch of the National Agricultural Museum is the first state museum in Ostrava and the sixth branch of this institution. It is located in Dolní oblast Vítkovice, in a building created by inserting new structures into two original factory halls from 1926. The halls were part of a copper smelter: the northern one served as a store for bulk materials, and the southern, longer one housed twelve concrete tanks for leaching roasted pyrite cinders.
Both halls were damaged during the bombing of Ostrava at the end of the Second World War, but were quickly repaired. Later a repair workshop for veronicas, i.e. mobile ferromanganese mixers, was set up in them, and the southern hall is still called Veronikárna after it. After production in the lower area ended, the halls served as warehouses and faced demolition. They were given new life by a design of the architect Josef Pleskot and the engineer Milan Šraml, who connected the halls with a generous extension and erected a third hall between them.
The museum presents the agricultural and food traditions of northern Moravia and Czech Silesia, and its third theme is Ostrava itself and its surroundings. The agricultural machinery exhibition shows more than forty machines, and the Food Depository offers an interactive look at food. The museum is part of the Technotrasa.
