About the museum
The Památník Petra Bezruče stands in Opava on the site where the birth house of the poet Vladimír Vašek, known under the name Petr Bezruč, once stood. The house was damaged at the end of the Second World War and later demolished. In 1946 the Společnost Petra Bezruče (Petr Bezruč Society) was founded in Opava; it began collecting relics of the poet and planned to build his museum. In 1952 these tasks were taken over by the Silesian Institute, and the memorial was opened in new premises on 5 May 1956. It also inherited the poet's estate, including the copyright to his work.
In 1958, the year Petr Bezruč died, the memorial became part of the Silesian Museum in Opava. In the same year, on his initiative, the literary festival Bezručova Opava was created; it takes place every year in September and is among the oldest cultural festivals in the Czech Republic.
The permanent exhibition Život a dílo Petra Bezruče (Life and Work of Petr Bezruč) on the ground floor was opened in September 1967 and has essentially not changed since. It introduces visitors to the most important moments of the poet's life and to how his only collection, Slezské písně (Silesian Songs), came into being. On the first floor is a hall for the museum's cultural events, such as temporary exhibitions, lectures and author readings.
The memorial is also a literary research workplace. Its storerooms hold more than 200,000 documents from the estates of around 85 writers and other personalities of Silesia and northern Moravia, which places the Silesian Museum second in the Czech Republic, right behind the Památník národního písemnictví (Museum of Czech Literature).
